Buy a New Computer
1. Computer choices and e-quotes
IT Services’s University purchases web page advises on the purchasing of
IT related equipment.
Standard preconfigured systems
The most convenient way to purchase a new computer is to order one of
the preconfigured desktops/laptops available on eMarketplace. IT
Services provides specifications and purchasing guidance for desktop or
laptops in their documentation.
Custom systems (including Apple products)
It is also possible to buy a more customised desktop/laptop, for example,
with increased power for modelling purposes etc., and this includes Apple
products. This requires you to identify the computer and its
specifications, acquire an e-quote, and at attach that to a non-catalogue
request on i-Proc (see info on the right).
2. Ordering the computer
Standard preconfigured systems
Standard desktop/laptop computers can be ordered via eMarketplace/i-
Proc according to the fairly simple instructions given in their guides for
desktops or laptops.
Custom systems (including Apple products)
1.
Identify the computer specification you want from the
manufacturer.
2.
Either acquire an e-quote directly from the manufacturer, or
provide the specifications to IT Services service desk (or ring them
on 65544) who will acquire it on your behalf
3.
Raise a non-catalogue request on i-Proc (see our help page) and
attach the e-quote at step 2 (i-Proc attachment screen shown in
image below). Note that if the requisition is rejected or returned
for some reason and you need to resubmit, then you will need to
re-attach all the uploaded forms again (i-Proc does not save these
after submission), so save them until your new computer arrives.
Note 1: IT Services point out that they may not be able to offer
support for systems they are unfamiliar with. You may also wish
to contact them before your purchase to ask for advice on which
companies currently have contracts with the university (this
changes annually)—this can save considerable cost through
discounts.
Note 2: If you are buying Apple products, use the Apple education
store (need to be on campus/VPN), select The University of
Manchester, and browse the systems to get the correct
educational price. You’ll need to have an Apple ID to log in if you
want to save the basket and get an e-quote yourself, or
alternatively just ask IT Services to acquire one for you.
