Skills Training and Course Catalogue
Searching for training courses
The university offers a wide range of training and development opportunities; a general overview is provided on
the StaffNet training and development page. However, if you want to search for a course or see what courses are
coming up, the university has a dedicated tool by IT Services for this called the Manchester Working Environment
(MWE) Training Catalogue (which is part of the eProg system). Use the navigation bar on the left of their catalogue
webpage to either view all courses or search for specific ones. If you want to learn how to use their search feature,
they have a tutorial here.
Note that all courses across the university are found here, including the personal and career development courses run
by the Researcher Development Team or those by IT Services etc. (see below).
When you’ve found a course you want to attend using their tool, just follow the links to book a place. (Some training
courses, particularly those run by IT Services, are self-teaching and don’t require attendance or booking.)
The courses you have registered for (and a history of past courses you’ve attended) can be seen by clicking on the “My
Training and Development” link on the left of their website as shown in the image here to the left.

Training courses offered by the Faculty
Researcher Development Team
The Faculty Researcher
Development Team hosts a
number of skills training
courses throughout the year for
research staff associated with personal and career
development, covering a wide range of topics from
presentation tips, Fellowship application support, to
starting your own business. Their website’s skills training
calendar lists the courses they run themselves, and their
regular bulletins emailed to us all provide a summary of
all new opportunities available (check this often!). Find a
course you want to attend, and click the link on its
description page to be directed to the training catalogue
to register.
Training courses offered by IT Services
IT Services also offer training
courses that are either
software related, e.g. using
Matlab or programming
using GPUs etc., or university system related, e.g. using i-
Proc etc.
•
Software related training courses (except for
ubiquitous software like Microsoft Office which is
considered as core system) are listed on the
Training Courses for Research Computing page.
•
System related training courses (including
Microsoft Office) are listed on their main page.
Use their navigation bar on the left (pictured) to
browse through the categories of courses.
All courses applied
for which require
booking will be
directed to the
training catalogue
discussed above for
registration.
Training courses offered by the Library
The university library also
offers training courses that are
either software related, e.g. using Endnote, or personal
development related such as learning how to use
eScholar. All currently available courses can be found in
their calendar.
External training courses
Vitae (see our page about them here) also have a list of
events they host, a number of which are training courses.
